A taste of home is what baker Jolly Onobun brings to her cakes, muffins and "chin chin" - a deep-fried snack of nuts, flour and jelly. She said when she arrived in Houston from Nigeria in 1996, she couldn't get used to bread from American stores. "When I first came, it was hard for me to do the bread here," said Onobun. "I wanted something more like home."
So, for the last six years, Onobun has been serving up creations at her own shop, the Jolly Jolly Bakery, in a shopping center at Westpark Drive and Highway 6. At first she catered to a primarily African clientele, but that has changed.
"I wouldn't call it Nigerian bread anymore," Onobun added. "I'd say, 'Bread for All.'"
